Too Much Sleep Is Bad For You

Too Much Sleep is Bad For YouThere’s has been much talk of how the average person doesn’t get enough sleep, yet can it also be true that too much sleep is bad for you? We’ve all experienced this scenario. You’ve had a hard week and suddenly you find yourself sleeping ten-plus hours. A little extra make up sleep is totally natural, especially if you’ve been living on a lack of sleep. Certainly the amount of sleep needed varies from individual to individual, but research has shown that yes, too much sleep is bad for you.

Why are people sleeping too much? There are as many factors as there are people whom over sleep. The most common factors are medical disorders such as hypersomnia, sleep apnea, and depression. It has always been thought that depression leads to lack of sleep and this can be true, but a study has shown that fifteen percent of people with depression sleep too long. Whether depression is a result or a symptom has yet to be decided. Other factors that can contribute are prescription medications, drugs, and alcohol.
Many people don’t realize there is a host of problems associated with excessive amounts of sleep. Too much sleep has been linked to diabetes also. Researchers have found that people, who slept an average of nine hours or more, boosted their chances for diabetes by fifty percent. They’ve also found the same percentage for diabetes in persons who sleep five hours or less. So it is very important to find the perfect balance of seven to nine hours for the average person.
Weight gain is another consequence of excessive sleeping. It has been shown that people, who slept on average of ten or more hours, are twenty-one percent more likely to become obese over a six year period.
It also seems that an extreme sleep pattern really affects women. A Nurses’ Health Study revealed data that showed that women who slept nine to eleven hours a night, were thirty-eight percent more likely to coronary heart disease than women in the normal range.
But the most dismal effect of oversleeping is possible death. Many studies have discovered that people who sleep eleven hours or more have a higher mortality rate than the average seven to eight hours. The reasons why are still unknown. So if you find that you sleep eleven hours a day and wonder, perhaps ‘I sleep too much’ then you probably are and don’t forget too much sleep is bad for you.
